What Makes a Great Nursing Uniform

Nursing is a difficult and challenging profession and requires a lot of hard work. Hence nurses need to be physically and mentally well. They need to feel comfortable and good nursing uniforms help to do so. These dresses need to be good as nurses need to pick up heavy items and take care of sick patients.

A nurse uniform is dress worn by the nurses for hygiene and identification. The nursing uniform generally consists of an apron, cap and the dress. The uniforms can vary between universities and schools but have been used traditionally similar ways all over the places.

Sisters or nuns were the early nuns and they were the ones to take care of the sick and dying people. Hence, the attire worn by the nurses was developed from the nun’s outfit. The clothing consisted of a mainly blue outfit. Hospitals are allowed to make their own kind of uniforms and there is various variations of the caps as well. By the passage of time, the traditional cotton caps are replaced by the disposable paper caps and the apron was replaced by plastic apron. Also, outerwear has been completely obsolete these days. Although this change has taken place, women in various parts of the world still wear dresses.

A nurses’ uniform consists of apron, caps and dress but sometimes a nurses’ pin is also used. The apron may be either pinafore apron or cobbler style apron.

There have been alternative nursing uniforms and changes have taken place in the nurses’ uniform. Trousers are used with dark blue tunics. In operating rooms, nursing scrubs may be used as well. The nurse needs to wear nursing uniform within the duty hours and if seen else, is liable to punishment. Tunics or scrubs have been more popular in the US whereas in third world countries, traditional dresses are still used.

Nurses usually wear scrubs on the top and bottom. This helps to increase comfort and range of motion, so that a nurse can move freely when lifting a patient or when bending over to care for a patient. It should be understood that the clothes should not be revealing and distracting.

Comfortable foot wear is also a most for nursing uniforms, as nurses need to walk between rooms to rooms to tend patients and need to have comfortable shoes. Having comfortable shoes can help nurses do their job more effectively. Also, extra undergarments are also worn by women to ensure their privacy and comfort ability. Clean clothes need to be worn not to spread any infection.
